1. Check whether your product actually fits
Open the directory’s current rules and inspect the audience, category, required fields and submission URL. A niche AI tools catalog might reject a general services business; a broad startup directory might accept it. If the page is only a homepage or the submit form is missing, label it a research candidate instead of a ready-to-submit directory.
Write down whether the standard listing is free, paid, or still unknown. An optional fast-track payment is different from a mandatory listing fee. Record any reciprocal-link or badge requirement before you spend time filling out the form.
2. Save a real submission receipt
After completing the form, record the date, your product name, the directory URL, and whatever confirmation the directory supplies. If approval is pending, keep status as submitted—not live. If the editor asks you to verify an email, add a manual-action note. Don’t create multiple duplicate submissions because one form timed out; first check the confirmation email or your account’s submissions tab.
- To submit: entry exists, no form completed yet.
- Submitted: actual form or email confirmation received.
- Live: a public product listing URL opens without founder-only access.
- Needs action: CAPTCHA, email confirmation, badge, or account step remains.
3. Inspect the published link itself
Open the live product page in a signed-out browser. Confirm that the product name, destination URL, and description are correct. Inspect the actual anchor linking to your site: rel="nofollow", rel="ugc" and rel="sponsored" matter; so do JavaScript redirects or buttons that never expose a crawlable URL. The directory’s marketing copy about links is not proof of the attributes on your listing.
Record the exact live URL and the date checked. If the page is no longer public or the link disappears, update the tracker. A working backlink checker helps verify a specific page, but one check does not certify permanent availability or predict a change in Domain Rating.
- Public listing URL
- Correct outbound destination
- Actual anchor and rel attribute
- Date of observation
4. Keep attribution honest
Directory click counts, pageviews and signups answer different questions. Tag the URL you submit with UTM parameters when the platform allows it. In your analytics, a referral or UTM visit can be attributed to a source only under a stated first-touch or last-touch rule. A backlink does not prove a visitor arrived, and a visit does not prove the visitor signed up.
SaaSGrave’s directory research page publishes the current catalog counts and checked entries with unknowns visible. Use the free tracker to record your own submission states instead of treating every line in a directory list as an approved listing.
FAQ
Questions founders ask
Does submitting guarantee a dofollow backlink?
No. A directory may reject the submission, change its link policy, or use a different rel attribute on the live product page.
When should I mark a listing live?
When the public listing URL opens and displays your product. A submitted form or account dashboard entry is not enough.
Will a listing raise DR?
No specific listing or guide guarantees a DR change. Ahrefs DR is a relative backlink-profile metric, not a Google ranking guarantee.
Ready to ship?
Keep evidence beside every submission.
Start from checked entries, save your shortlist, and mark a listing live only after verifying its public page.
